Trump’s threat to annex Greenland by force is not bluster. What the New Yorker called a “ludicrous, deadly” plan marks a dangerous step towards wider war, another move in America’s increasing use of military violence to shore up its declining position as supreme global power. Control over Greenland is only part of a wider US strategy – the whole Arctic region is in its sights.

This article is the first of a three-part series on space from an anti-imperialist perspective. It starts by questioning the “new frontier” rhetoric launching the United States’ Apollo project, and its ultimate claim that Neil Armstrong’s “one small step” onto the Moon was ever a “giant leap for Mankind” itself. But while space programmes of the US and other nations have a military aspect, they also apply and carry out scientific and technological research of potential benefit to everyone. The good and bad of what is actually happening in space need disentangling from idealistic stories being told about it by cheerleaders and critics.

Bolivia is experiencing political turmoil with the right, supported by the United States gaining the presidency. However, there is popular mass protest against the neo-liberal, austerity policies that the government is imposing.

Based on my recent visit to Belarus and Russia, and ongoing coverage of the media there, here are some observations on political developments in both countries.

The German Democratic Republic came to an end 35 years ago - 2025, is also the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on 8th May 1945, when the country that was to become the GDR started on its road. These anniversaries are an occasion to remember what the GDR really was, in contrast to the crude propaganda picture spread by the ruling classes in the west.

The West’s multifaceted crisis is undermining the established norms of power, alliances and economic systems. This has been exposed and made worse by the United States and Israel’s war against Iran and all its unintended consequences.

Iran has so far managed to successfully resist and stand up to the US and Israel's brutal and unprovoked aggression. We must call for a real and lasting ceasefire and negotiations in a framework that respects Iranian sovereignty and the rule of international law, and guarantees safety to Palestinian, Lebanese and Iranian civilians.

Europe is weaker relative to the US now than at any time since the end of World War 2 – the result of deliberate US strategy to subordinate its allies in order to create a disciplined bloc ready for major war against China. The Iran war has accelerated Europe’s difficulties.

Israeli weapon systems and tactics applied elsewhere are often touted and priced as “battle-tested” on Palestinians, but the way the aggressors are conducting their current war on Iran and Lebanon indicates that a strategy aimed at destroying the resistance and its social and material basis, trialled during the genocide and practically synonymous with it, is now being applied beyond Gaza.

The difficulties we face in trying to avert climate catastrophe are only becoming more evident. The avarice and myopia of capitalism are impediments the world can do without. To challenge that we need not only existing efforts but new campaigns everywhere.
